Our Family Adventure on the Amalfi Coast

This past June, my family and I went on a journey to the Amalfi Coast in Italy that we will never forget. Our group included myself, my husband, our 12-year-old daughter, our 15-year-old son, my brother, and my mother-in-law. We stayed in a charming seaside condo in Maiori, a quieter town that offered the perfect balance of relaxation and adventure. From the stunning views to the delectable food and unforgettable experiences, the Amalfi Coast captivated us from start to finish.

Staying in Maiori: A Perfect Seaside Retreat

Maiori, one of the larger towns on the Amalfi Coast, became our home for the week. Its laid-back vibe was a welcome change from the busier towns like Amalfi and Positano. Our condo faced the sea, giving us a daily dose of breathtaking views of the sparkling water and dramatic cliffs. Every morning, we sipped coffee on the balcony while soaking in the coastal breeze.

Maiori’s beach, Spiaggia di Maiori, was just steps away from our condo. We spent hours swimming and lounging there, though we were surprised by how rocky and chilly the water was! Despite that, it was a fun experience, and we’ll never forget the laughter and the challenge of navigating the pebble-filled shore.

Exploring Local Restaurants: A Culinary Adventure

Our Family Adventure on the Amalfi Coast

One of the best parts of our trip was sampling the incredible food on the Amalfi Coast. Every evening, we ventured out to try a new restaurant. Two spots in Maiori stood out: Ristorante Pizzeria Nettuno and Mammato.

At Ristorante Pizzeria Nettuno, we indulged in hearty portions of pizza, pasta, calzones, and sausage. My son declared the calzone the best dish he’d eaten on the entire trip! The service was warm and welcoming, and we left with full stomachs and happy hearts. I highly recommend this spot if you’re visiting Maiori—you won’t leave disappointed.

Mammato was another culinary highlight. Their “catch of the day” was a fresh and flavorful delight. We also devoured fried calamari, pizza, and steak. Every dish was perfectly prepared, showcasing the Amalfi Coast’s dedication to fresh, local ingredients. Dining at Mammato felt like a celebration of the region’s incredible seafood and rich culinary traditions.

A Day Trip to Amalfi and Ravello

No trip to the Amalfi Coast would be complete without exploring Amalfi and Ravello. We decided to take a bus to Amalfi, and while the winding roads made for a bit of a nerve-wracking ride, the views were absolutely worth it.

Amalfi itself was bustling with charm. We wandered through narrow streets, admired the Duomo di Amalfi, and enjoyed gelato as we explored. The lively atmosphere and gorgeous architecture made it a memorable stop, but the highlight of our day was yet to come.

From Amalfi, we caught another bus to Ravello, a hilltop town famous for its stunning vistas. Villa Cimbrone Gardens was a must-see on our list, and it did not disappoint. Walking through the gardens felt like stepping into a dream. The panoramic views from the Terrace of Infinity were simply breathtaking—the kind of beauty that makes you pause and savor the moment. If you’re planning a trip to the Amalfi Coast, do not miss Villa Cimbrone Gardens. It’s worth every step, even if you’re tired from all the walking.

By the end of the day, we were exhausted from exploring, so we opted for a cab ride back to Maiori. It was a much-needed break and allowed us to relax while reflecting on the incredible sights we had seen.

Tips for Traveling the Amalfi Coast

Traveling with a multigenerational family can be tricky, but the Amalfi Coast made it easy for us to find activities and experiences that everyone enjoyed. Here are some of my top recommendations:

  1. Don’t Skip Maiori or Minori: While towns like Amalfi and Positano get all the attention, consider staying in Maiori or its neighbor Minori. These towns are quieter and less crowded, offering a more relaxed experience without sacrificing the stunning scenery.
  2. Take the Bus, but Be Prepared: The bus rides along the Amalfi Coast are an adventure in themselves. The views are spectacular, but the narrow roads can be daunting. For longer trips, like the return from Ravello, a cab can be a more comfortable option.
  3. Try Local Specialties: The Amalfi Coast is a food lover’s paradise. Be sure to try fresh seafood, handmade pasta, and traditional pizza. Restaurants like Ristorante Pizzeria Nettuno and Mammato are fantastic choices for an authentic meal.
  4. Bring Comfortable Shoes: Between cobblestone streets and steep hills, you’ll be doing plenty of walking. Comfortable shoes are a must to fully enjoy your adventures.
  5. Visit Villa Cimbrone Gardens: This gem in Ravello is a can’t-miss experience. The views alone are worth the trip, but the gardens themselves are equally enchanting.

Reflecting on Our Amalfi Coast Adventure

Our week on the Amalfi Coast was everything we hoped it would be: a mix of relaxation, adventure, and unforgettable memories. Maiori provided a peaceful retreat, while the nearby towns of Amalfi and Ravello offered plenty of excitement and beauty.

Whether you’re traveling with family, friends, or on your own, the Amalfi Coast is a destination that leaves a lasting impression. From the delicious food to the awe-inspiring views, every moment felt special. If you’re planning a visit, I wholeheartedly recommend considering Maiori or Minori as your home base. These quieter towns let you soak in the magic of the Amalfi Coast without the hustle and bustle of larger, more touristy spots.

The Amalfi Coast is truly a slice of paradise, and our time there was nothing short of extraordinary. We can’t wait to return someday and create even more memories in this breathtaking corner of the world.
