Top 3 Places to Visit in Puerto Rico
As my family is preparing for our next vacation to Puerto Rico, I figured it would be appropriate to share three of the top places to visit on the Island. We have not been to the island in a couple of years, so we are going to visit quite a few places that we have been to before, as well as some places that we have never visited. We are very excited. So, without further ado, here are the top three things I recommend checking out in Puerto Rico!
Old San Juan
Old San Juan is a charming neighborhood that is full of history and culture. As you stroll through its cobblestone streets, the vibrant colors of the colonial buildings will transport you back in time. The architecture is a beautiful blend of Spanish and Caribbean influences, reflecting Puerto Rico’s rich heritage.
Start your journey at Castillo San Felipe del Morro, also known as El Morro. This 16th-century fortress stands proudly on a hilltop overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. Explore its massive walls and hidden tunnels while taking in breathtaking panoramic views.
Next, immerse yourself in the art and culture of Old San Juan by visiting La Casa Blanca. This historic house was once home to Ponce de León’s family and now serves as a museum dedicated to Puerto Rican art and history. Be sure to check out the stunning gardens surrounding the house too!
No visit to Old San Juan would be complete without exploring Calle del Cristo, one of its main streets filled with shops, restaurants, and galleries. Indulge in local delicacies like mofongo or alcapurrias as you wander through this lively street.
You could really spend an entire day exploring this charming area! There is just so much to see and do. On the weekends, they also have Paseo De La Princesa, which packs the streets with local vendors selling food, souvenirs, and endless goodies!
El Yunque National Forest
Located on the northeastern side of Puerto Rico, El Yunque National Forest is a true haven for nature enthusiasts. With its lush greenery, cascading waterfalls, and diverse wildlife, this enchanting tropical rainforest offers an immersive experience like no other.
One highlight not to be missed is La Mina Falls – a majestic waterfall whose shimmering waters invite you for a refreshing dip on hot summer days. As you swim beneath its cascades, surrounded by towering trees and moss-covered rocks, it’s easy to feel completely immersed in nature’s embrace.
For those seeking adventure, hiking up Mount Britton provides breathtaking panoramic views from 3,740 feet above sea level. The sight of rolling hills blanketed in lush foliage stretching out as far as the eye can see will leave you awe-inspired and craving more time spent within this natural paradise.
Boquerón, Cabo Rojo, Puerto Rico
Boquerón, Cabo Rojo is a hidden gem in Puerto Rico that offers visitors the perfect combination of natural beauty and laid-back beach vibes. Located on the southwestern coast of the island, this charming coastal town has something for everyone.
One of the main attractions in Boquerón is its stunning white sand beach. With crystal clear turquoise waters and palm-lined shores, it’s no wonder why this beach is often considered one of Puerto Rico’s best-kept secrets. Whether you want to relax under the sun or take a refreshing dip in the ocean, Boquerón Beach doesn’t disappoint.
Aside from its picturesque beach, Boquerón also boasts an exciting nightlife scene. The town comes alive at night with vibrant bars and restaurants lining its streets, particularly around El Poblado de Boquerón. Enjoy live music, local cuisine, and ice-cold drinks as you mingle with locals and fellow travelers.
For nature lovers, nearby Cabo Rojo National Wildlife Refuge is a must-visit destination. This protected area encompasses mangroves, salt flats, and coastal forests teeming with diverse flora and fauna. Take a leisurely hike along one of the refuge’s trails or embark on a bird-watching adventure to spot some unique species.
No matter where you go in Puerto Rico, be prepared to be captivated by its natural beauty and warm hospitality. It’s easy to see why this island is often referred to as “La Isla del Encanto” – The Enchanted Island.
